Formed in New York in 1980. The name "Sonic Youth" is derived from "Fred Sonic Smith," guitarist of the legendary Detroit band MC5, and "Youth," which is often used in the names of reggae artists. "SONIC YOUTH" is said to be the name of the band. Their chaotic noise, experimental and art-oriented musicality, and steady underground activities have contributed greatly to the indie scene. Their artistic orientation is diverse, and they have been in close contact with artists from various fields. The band has been on hiatus since 2011, but is still respected by many younger bands.
