Seijun Suzuki
One of Japan's leading film directors.
Born in 1923 as the eldest son of a kimono shop owner in Nihonbashi, Tokyo.
In 1943, he was drafted into the military as an enlisted man. Later, in 1948, he passed the assistant director examination at Shochiku Ofuna Studio. After working as an assistant director for Tsuruo Iwama, who supported Japanese films in the early postwar period, he moved to Nikkatsu, which resumed production in 1954.
In 1956, he made his directorial debut with "Victory in My Hands: A Toast at the Port. He then established his own style in films such as "The Beast's Youth" (1963), "Shisei Ichidai" (1965), "Tokyo Drifter" (1966), and "Korashi no Rakuin" (1967), and his style has been described as "Seijun Aesthetics". His "Zigoinelwaizen" (1980) won the Best Film Award at the 4th Japan Academy Awards and the Special Jury Prize at the 31st Berlin International Film Festival, and made a name for himself both in Japan and abroad.
